Worried someone will know you screenshotted their Instagram? For the vast majority of content, Instagram does NOT notify anyone when you take a screenshot. There is one narrow exception. Here's the full breakdown so you know exactly where you stand.

Stories — NO notification

You can screenshot someone's Story and they will not be told. Instagram tested screenshot alerts for Stories years ago but removed the feature — today, screenshotting a Story is private.

Posts, Reels and profile pictures — NO notification

Screenshotting a normal feed post, a Reel, or someone's profile picture never triggers any alert. The account owner has no way to know you captured it.

The ONE exception: disappearing photos/videos in DMs

If someone sends you a photo or video in a direct message using "view once" or "allow replay" (disappearing) mode, and you screenshot it, Instagram does notify the sender. Regular DMs and everything else are safe.
